13th Anniversary of the National Apology for Forced Adoptions

Saturday 21 March marks 13 years since the Australian Government issued an apology to people affected by forced adoption and removal policies.

The apology formally acknowledged the profound harm caused by past adoption practices that led to the forced separation of many children from their birth parents. It also recognised the lifelong impact these experiences have had on mothers, fathers, adopted people and extended families.

For many, the apology represented an important step in acknowledging the injustice and pain caused by those policies. While it cannot undo the past, it serves as a powerful recognition of the experiences of those affected and the need for ongoing support and understanding.

As we reflect on this anniversary, we stand alongside those who continue to live with the lasting effects of forced adoption. Many individuals and families still carry feelings of grief, loss, trauma and disconnection. Their journeys toward healing are deeply personal and can unfold over many years.

At Relationships Australia Victoria, our Forced Adoption Support Service provides free and confidential support for people impacted by forced adoption practices. It offers a safe and compassionate space for individuals to explore their experiences, access counselling, and receive information and guidance.

‘Our clients often come to us carrying decades of unresolved grief, shame or a profound sense of disconnection. Through gentle, trauma-informed support, many begin to understand and process their experiences – sometimes for the first time.’ – RAV Therapeutic Services Coordinator

Open Place also supports any Forgotten Australians that have been affected by forced adoption practices, offering a range of services including counselling and assistance with historical records searches.

If you or someone you know has been affected by forced adoption, support is available. We encourage you to reach out to one of these two services to learn more about how we can help.

To mark the anniversary, we’re proudly supporting the 13th Anniversary Commemorative event for everyone impacted by past adoption practices, hosted by the Association Representing Mothers Separated by Adoption (Victoria) and VANISH at St Andrews Reserve on Saturday 21 March.
