Life Transitions and Mental Health

Why are life transitions important?

For many people, adapting to a transition, such as moving interstate, marriage, losing a job (or starting a new job), divorce, separation, the birth of a child (or the death of a loved one), or any other transition that severely alters one’s day-to-day life, can be challenging. These sudden and sometimes extreme transitions can affect a clients mental health and lead to symptoms like anxiety, fear, loneliness, and physical issues, such as trouble sleeping, panic attacks, and digestive problems.

Why are life transitions difficult?

For the most part, human beings are creatures of habit. They depend on routines to help maintain a sense of safety and orderliness, so when something happens to disrupt these routines, people almost always experience feelings of stress and anxiety. When someone experiences a major Life Transition, they are forced to re-invent the way they travel through life.
